Florida Hit Hardest by West Marine Closures (List below)
West Marine Announces Major Store Closures Across the United States
The marine retail industry was shaken last month after West Marine revealed plans to close 59 retail locations across 23 states as part of its ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring efforts. The company, long recognized as one of the largest marine supply retailers in the United States, says the move is designed to reduce operating costs and position the business for long-term sustainability.
For boat owners, anglers, sailors, and watersports enthusiasts, these closures could significantly impact local access to marine supplies, boating equipment, electronics, safety gear, and maintenance products.
Why Is West Marine Closing Stores?
According to court filings and company statements, West Marine's restructuring is being driven by several factors, including substantial debt obligations, high lease costs, changing consumer purchasing habits, and increased competition from online retailers. Company leadership has stated that remaining stores, online operations, and mobile services will continue to serve customers during and after the restructuring process.
The retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2026 and is using the process to reorganize operations while attempting to strengthen its financial position.
States Impacted by West Marine Store Closures
The 59 announced closures span 23 states. Some states are experiencing a larger number of closures than others.
States Losing the Most West Marine Stores:
Florida – 8 stores
Michigan – 6 stores
California – 5 stores
Washington – 5 stores
Florida is expected to be the hardest-hit state, with multiple locations throughout the state scheduled to close. Michigan, California, and Washington also face significant reductions in store availability.
Florida boaters, anglers, and marine businesses will feel the largest impact from West Marine's restructuring. Eight Florida locations have been identified for closure, more than any other state in the country.
